Getting Your Boat or RV Ready for Summer in Baldwin County

Summer on the Gulf Coast means one thing — it's time to get your boat or RV out and enjoy it. But between trips, you need somewhere to keep it that's convenient, accessible, and watched over. Here's how to get your rig ready for the season and what to look for in a storage spot.

Before Your First Trip of the Season
If your boat or RV has been sitting since last fall, don't just hook up and go. Take 30 minutes to walk through the basics.

Check your tires. Look for cracks, low pressure, or uneven wear. A blowout on I-10 with a fifth-wheel behind you is not how you want to start the summer. If you store at Spanish Fort Self Storage, we have an on-site air compressor available during access hours so you can top off before you pull out.

Check your battery. Disconnect it, clean the terminals, and test the charge. If it's been sitting for months, it may need a slow charge overnight before it's road-ready.

Inspect your hitch, coupler, and safety chains. Make sure everything locks, latches, and moves the way it should. Rust and corrosion happen fast in our humidity.

Check your lights. Have someone stand behind the trailer while you test brake lights, turn signals, and running lights. Replace anything that's out before you're on the highway.

Give it a good washdown. Salt air, pollen, and dirt build up fast down here. A rinse before your first trip makes everything easier to inspect and keeps your rig looking good.

What to Look For in a Boat or RV Parking Spot

Wide drive aisles. If you can't get a 30-foot fifth-wheel in and out without a 12-point turn, the lot wasn't designed for your rig.

Someone actually on-site. A gate code is not a substitute for a person. Look for a facility where someone lives on the property or is physically present during access hours.

Air compressor access. It sounds small, but being able to check and fill your tires without driving to a gas station before every trip saves real time.

Month-to-month terms. Summer plans change. You shouldn't be locked into a 6-month contract for parking.

Easy highway access. You don't want to navigate narrow residential streets with a boat trailer. Look for a lot near a main road.

Storing Between Trips

A lot of boat and RV owners don't need year-round storage — they need a home base between trips. Somewhere to park it for two weeks, grab it on a Friday afternoon, bring it back Sunday night. That's what outdoor parking is built for. Month-to-month means you're not paying for months you don't use it.
